About this tool

The UnblockPDF Extract Images tool scans a PDF document and pulls out all embedded raster images, allowing you to download them individually or as a batch ZIP archive. The extraction process runs inside your browser, ensuring that your documents and the extracted images remain private and are never uploaded to any external server. The tool analyzes the internal structure of the PDF to locate every embedded image object, including photographs, scanned content, logos, charts rendered as bitmaps, and any other raster graphics. Each image is extracted in its original format and resolution without any re-encoding or compression, which means you receive the images at the exact quality they were embedded in the PDF. Common output formats include JPEG for photographs and PNG for graphics with transparency. After extraction, each image is displayed as a preview with its dimensions, file size, and format information. You can select specific images to download individually or use the batch download option to get all extracted images in a single ZIP archive. The images are named sequentially with their page number reference so you can easily identify where each image appeared in the original document. The tool handles all standard PDF image embedding methods including inline images, XObject image references, and images within form XObjects. It supports common image compression formats used in PDFs including JPEG, JPEG2000, CCITT fax encoding (used in scanned documents), Flate-compressed images, and LZW-compressed images. Common use cases include recovering original photographs from a PDF portfolio or brochure, extracting logos and graphics from marketing materials for reuse, pulling out charts and diagrams from reports for inclusion in presentations, recovering scanned images embedded in archival documents, and extracting product images from PDF catalogs for use on websites. The extracted images can be used directly in other applications or imported back into PDFs using the UnblockPDF editor. The tool supports files up to 50 MB for anonymous users and 100 MB for registered accounts. It works across all modern browsers on desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.

Tips for best results

  • Use the batch ZIP download to retrieve all images at once instead of downloading each image individually for large documents.
  • Check extracted image resolutions before using them in print materials, as some PDFs contain low-resolution preview images.
  • After extracting images, use the Convert to PDF tool to create new PDFs from selected images with custom page layouts.
  • For scanned PDFs where the entire page is one image, consider using the OCR tool instead to extract the text content from those pages.

Good to know

Vector graphics such as charts, diagrams, and logos drawn with PDF drawing commands are not extracted as images. Only embedded raster images are captured.
