About this tool
The UnblockPDF Flatten tool converts all interactive elements within a PDF document into static, non-editable content. This process takes fillable form fields, annotations, comments, sticky notes, markup, digital signatures, and other interactive layers and permanently merges them into the base page content. The flattening runs inside your browser, ensuring that your documents remain private and are never uploaded to any external server. When a PDF is flattened, every interactive element is rendered as it currently appears and then embedded directly into the page content. Fillable text fields become static text, checkboxes show their current state permanently, dropdown selections are locked to their current values, and annotations such as highlights, underlines, and comments become part of the visual page content. The result is a clean, static document that looks identical to the interactive version but cannot be modified by anyone who receives it. Flattening often reduces the file size because the interactive element definitions, JavaScript code, action triggers, and associated metadata are removed from the document structure. The reduction is most noticeable in forms-heavy documents with many fields, validation scripts, and calculation formulas. The tool preserves the visual appearance of every element exactly as it was before flattening. Colors, positions, font sizes, and all other visual properties remain unchanged. The only difference is that what was previously interactive content is now permanently embedded in the page rendering. Common use cases include finalizing filled forms before submission to ensure the data cannot be altered, locking annotations and review comments into a permanent record, preparing documents for archival where interactive elements could cause compatibility issues with future PDF readers, reducing file size by removing form definitions and scripts, and creating a tamper-proof version of signed documents. The flattened output can be downloaded immediately or further processed with other UnblockPDF tools such as adding watermarks or password protection. Flattening is a permanent, irreversible operation. Always retain a copy of the original interactive PDF before flattening in case you need to modify form data or annotations later. The tool supports files up to 50 MB for anonymous users and 100 MB for registered accounts.

Tips for best results
- Always keep a backup of the original interactive PDF before flattening, as the process is permanent and irreversible.
- After flattening, use the Protect tool to add password encryption for an additional layer of document security.
- Flatten documents before sharing externally to prevent recipients from modifying form data or removing annotations.
- Use the Compress tool after flattening to further reduce file size, especially for documents with many embedded images.
Good to know
Flattening is permanent and irreversible. Once interactive elements are merged into static content, they cannot be restored to their editable state.
