You scan a stack of documents, open the resulting PDF, and some pages are blank. The scanner appeared to process them, the page count looks right, but several pages show nothing at all. This is a surprisingly common scanning issue that wastes time and causes anxiety, especially when the original documents are no longer available for re-scanning. The causes range from simple configuration mistakes like scanning single-sided originals in duplex mode to hardware problems with the scanner itself. Most cases are fixable or preventable once you understand the root causes.
The most common cause of blank pages in scanned PDFs is duplex scanning of single-sided originals. When the scanner is set to scan both sides but the pages only have content on one side, every other page in the resulting PDF is blank. Scanner feed problems can also cause blank pages — if a page is pulled through too quickly or at an angle, the sensor may miss the content entirely. Very light printing on the original (such as faded receipts or light pencil writing) may fall below the scanner's brightness threshold and produce a page that looks blank. White margins being scanned as full pages is another possibility. Finally, software bugs in the scanner driver or PDF assembly process can occasionally produce blank page entries that reference missing image data.

Remove blank pages

Adjust scanner settings and re-scan
If content pages appear blank, try re-scanning with adjusted settings: increase brightness/contrast, switch from duplex to simplex mode, reduce scan speed, and ensure pages feed straight.

Diagnosing Duplex Scanning Issues
Duplex scanning problems account for the vast majority of blank page complaints. The pattern is distinctive and easy to identify. If every other page is blank (pages 2, 4, 6, 8, and so on), your scanner was set to duplex mode while scanning single-sided originals. The scanner faithfully captured the blank backs of each sheet. The fix is simple: delete the blank pages using our tools or re-scan in simplex mode. Some scanners offer an automatic blank page detection feature that skips empty pages during duplex scanning. Check your scanner settings for options like 'Skip Blank Pages' or 'Blank Page Removal' and enable this feature to prevent the problem in future scans.
Recovering Faint or Low-Contrast Content
When blank pages are caused by faint content on the original documents rather than by duplex scanning, the data may actually be present in the scan but invisible at normal brightness and contrast levels. Opening the scanned page in an image editor and dramatically increasing the contrast can reveal text that appeared blank in the PDF viewer.
